PROGRAM AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT UNIT

In August 2016, CLAC created the Program and Project Management Unit with the main function of contributing to the fulfillment of the institutional mission and strategic plan through the coherent implementation of CLAC’s programs and projects.

From 2019 to 2021, CLAC maintained an average of 15 active projects each year, with a coverage in 12 countries, involving an average of 5,725 people per year from an average of 112 Fairtrade certified organizations each year, which helped to strengthen the membership in different aspects.

Our working model is based on Fairtrade principles, and seeks precisely that CLAC’s membership actively participates in its development, thus promoting the empowerment of the target groups of each project/program. In this way, the probabilities of achieving efficient and lasting results and changes in favor of small producers are maximized. For 2018, the cumulative budget of these projects represented about 20% of CLAC’s total income.

I want to thank CLAC, especially the project officer, for having implemented this field school in the Cooperative. I thought that in the training we were only going to touch on climate change issues, but actually it was not like that and with this training my ideas will be taken into consideration as the person in charge of cocoa quality for the cooperative. There were many things that I told them to change or improve, but they did not listen to me, but now they are all listening to me in this training.

Strategy

Our strategy is based on implementing a project management model in accordance with the principles of fair trade, which promotes the development of local skills, spaces for accountability among all those involved and a transparent management process. In this way, we ensure the participation of the target groups in decision-making throughout the project cycle, breaking with the paternalistic view that producers are “beneficiaries” of projects and recognizing them as the main actors in their development processes.

The proposed management model has been specifically designed for CLAC, based on validated project management methodologies and the experience of the CLAC team; it is a dynamic and highly adaptable model. This allows us to ensure an effective and efficient management of resources and a focus on achieving significant results; and to propose new challenges for the future.
